Frequently Asked Questions
✜ Is Chiropractic for me?
Dr. Karen Shiu is a neuromuscular expert and has been working closely with Olympians and desk jockeys for years. Chiropractic is good for anyone who wants to function optimally while maintaining proper balance of the body. Chiropractic is a hands on, "holistic approach" to healthcare. While other forms of healthcare treat a patient's symptoms (pain, numbness, tingling and headaches), Chiropractic works to find the underlying cause to correct the problem. Even if you are without pain, musculoskeletal imbalances may be present that can lead to improper bio mechanics and cause a patient's symptoms. Although chiropractors are primarily thought of as "back and neck pain" doctors, we can help in many areas of your health. Regular Chiropractic care will help maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
✜ Is Physical Therapy for me?
Dr. Choklin treats from the inception of injury, through the rehabilitative process and into the return-to-sport or activity phase. He believes that many principles of sports rehabilitation and orthopedic physical therapy apply to clientele who may not necessarily have debilitating injury or pain, but who many still face barriers that prevent them from reaching their health and fitness goals. Dr. Choklin treats the individual rather than specific diagnoses and helps patients reach these goals, regardless of whether they have a technical medical diagnosis or not. Strengthening, conditioning, healthy movement and quality of life can always be optimized no matter who you are.
✜ What if my apartment doesn't have an appropriate space?
Our home care program empowers people to continue their active care in small spaces. A custom tailored exercise program and stretching sequence will be provided with the space available. Our doctors utilize the space and furniture to help to maximize therapy with minimal equipment.
✜ Why are you an out of network provider?
I believe a unique aspect of my practice is that each session is 60 minutes of one-on-one time between patient and therapist. A patient will always have the undivided attention of the same therapist, there is no delegation of work to assistants, interns nor aides, and ample time can be devoted to the particular needs of each patient. Being an out-of-network provider allows me to maintain this model that results in better medical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
✜ Do I need a prescription?
No. Direct access to chiropractors and physical therapists without a prescription or referral by a physician is allowed under New York State law. Our team of doctors evaluate and assess a patient's need for chiropractic or physical therapy, and to refer the patient out to a physician in the event that chiropractic and physical therapy is not warranted due to medical reasons.
